The New England Ratepayers Association, which does not actually represent ratepayers, has launched an attack on your solar rights.
This front group for big utilities is trying to end the fundamental, state-based solar energy policy that allows solar customers to earn fair credit for the electricity their solar panels produce.
Over 2.2 million families and 100,000 businesses have already invested tens of billions of their own dollars in energy independence. A petition has been filed with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) that asks for a federal takeover of my solar rights. This request would hand over control of local energy policy to the federal government. I urge you to intervene with FERC and insist the Commission deny this petition and let states make their own energy choices.
Fundamentally, this is about our state’s rights and my energy freedom. For almost forty years, states have appropriately had jurisdiction over solar rights. The federal government has no business imposing its will on our families and businesses that want to take control over their energy future.
I am outraged that the New England Ratepayers Association (NERA) has filed a dangerous petition with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to end state’s rights to implement net metering, and I urge you to oppose it.
Local solar helps everyone save by reducing transmission costs, providing local peak energy resources, bolstering grid resilience, and more. We cannot afford to lose those savings now, during a global financial crisis, or in the future.
Please work with the relevant state agencies to intervene in Docket EL20-42 at FERC to oppose the attack on our state’s ability to set energy policy for its own residents. If our state agencies have already intervened, thank you for taking action so quickly.
